Chuy

Chuy is a town in the Atlantic Coast region of Uruguay, with its twin town of Chuí right across the street in Brazil.

The main street in Chuy is the actual border between Uruguay and Brazil. One half of the town speaks Spanish and pays in pesos, while the other speaks Portuguese and prices are in reais

Buses stop in the center of town.

If you plan to cross the border to Brazil make sure you get your passport stamped at the border, before entering the town.

• Tax-free shopping and pirated cd's from Brazil.

• Hotel Internacional, Rio San Luis 121, 0474-2055. Cheap rooms in case you need to spend the night here.

• Seven kilometer west of town is the beautiful Fuerte San Miguel an old Spanish fortress. There are infrequent buses going, but hitchhiking is also an option. If you have to wait for your connection it's worth a visit.

• Pretty cool that one side of the street is Brazil and the other, Uruguay. Different currencies and languages. Very easy to get around Uruguay from there, not so easy to get through Brazil, maybe easy actually, but definitly not cheap. • Emma D.
• El Chuy es la frontera entre Uruguay y Brasil. Es una calle donde una vereda es uruguaya y la otra brasilera. Se encuentran abarrotes y ropa a precios muy convenientes. Además, del lado uruguayo hay Duty Free Shops, pero para poder comprar hay que comprobar que la nacionalidad no es uruguaya. • Julieta F.
