Daman and Diu
Daman and Diu are two small enclaves in Western India. Daman is a small city on the mouth of the Daman Ganga river bounded on all sides by the state of Gujarat, while Diu is a small island off the coast of Gujarat.
Overview
Daman and Diu were under Portuguese occupation from 1539 to 1961, when the Indian government used military action to retake all the Portuguese enclaves. Apart from Daman and Diu, Goa and Dadra and Nagar Haveli were "liberated" in this conflict. This area used to be a part of a larger union territory of Goa, Daman and Diu till Goa became a state by itself.
