The Danube basin in Europe extends almost 3000 km from the Alps in Germany and Austria to the Danube Delta and the Black Sea coast of Romania. Covering over 800,000 square kilometres, this region of Europe is the land surrounding the Danube River, its tributaries and flood plains.
Dominated and both divided and united by the Danube River, the second longest river in Europe, the surrounding lands that form the Danube basin are steeped in history, with evidence that parts of it have been settled since the 5th millennium BC.
The new cycling route EuroVelo 6 www.eurovelo6.org which runs from the Atlantic Ocean to the Black Sea, follows the Danube river from Passau, Germany to its estuary on the Black Sea, in Romania. EuroVelo 6 includes the Donauradweg, which stretches from Passau in Germany through Austria to Vienna and continues on to Bratislava in Slovakia.
