Elmina
Elmina is a city in Coastal Plain region of Ghana. It's name comes from the Portuguese word for "Mine". The gold found in these mines are also the origin of the name "Gold Coast", which was the name of what is now Ghana, when it was a British Colony.

Elmina Travel Tips
Elmina travel tips courtesy of GeckoGo
- When you go to Elmina definitely check out the fish harbor market. But keep you camera away or at least hidden because the locals don't like you taking pictures there. It makes sense though. You wouldn't want your daily life to be viewed as an attraction either. • Sara F.
- A visit to Elmina (or the Ghanean coast for that matter) is not complete without a visit to the Elmina Slave Fortress. The fortress was used by the Dutch to trade slaves to their various colonies in from the 16th century. The guides are well informed and a visit is most definately chilling … • Anne-Marijke P.
- Don't dress up, don't drive there yourself (but use public transportation = a tro tro), and don't stay at a luxurious hotel. Go shoe string on this one. • Edward V.
