Huila
Huila is a department in the Andino region of Colombia.
Cities
- Neiva : Founded in 1612 by on the fertil grounds of the Magdalena Valley by Diego de Ospina Y Medinilla, this is the department's capital.
- Gigante : Town known for its Ceiba de la libertad, a huge tree planted in a park as a symbol to the abolition of slavery in 1850.
- Villavieja : Located close to the Tatacoa Desert, this village is a good place for fossil hunting and star watching.
Other Destinations
- Betania Dam : Build on the Rio Magdalena 30 km to the south of Neiva, the dam and artificial lake next to it are a good place to practice water sports.
- Nevado del Huila National Park : Created in 1997 with the objective of preserving its Andean forests and perpetual snow. This reserve hosts numerous springs and torrents that go on to become the Rio Magdalena and the Rio Cauca.
- Rivera : The most famous aguas termales of the department and a year round temperature of 24°C makes this city worth of being called the "medicinal town of Huila".
- San Agustin : Important archeological center of Colombia with numerous megalithic sculptures, some of which over 3000 years old.
