Karamay

Karamay (克拉玛依; Kèlāmǎyī) is a city in Xinjiang Province in China. It is famous as an oil base for drilling in the surrounding desert. The oil industry contributes to the city's wealth which is evident in the clean and spacious streets.

Getting There

Buses and taxis leave for Urumqi regularly. The trip is approximately three hours by taxi and four by bus. Taxis are about ¥100 per person. There are also flights to and from Urumqi.

Sights
  • Jiulongtan. Park and recreation area with various sculptures.
  • Mogui Cheng, (100km north of the city). A series of rock formations.
