Kempsey

Kempsey is a town on the Mid-North Coast of New South Wales.

Overview

Kempsey is a service town on the Macleay River. It it a significant station on the railway line between Sydney and Brisbane.

Getting There

By train, Countrylink, the twice daily Sydney, Brisbane, and the once daily Grafton services stop here.

By bus, the coaches plying the Pacific Highway between Sydney and Brisbane stop here.

By car, the Pacific Highway goes straight through the town, about 400km north from Sydney although a bypass is under construction. Untill then, the town is infamous for traffic congestion during long weekends and school holidays. Allow up to an hour extra to get through town during these periods.

  • Hat Head National Park. Camping. Fantastic beaches, bushwalking.

  • The Macleay, 61 Smith Street. Bistro. The Flaming Steer. Surprisingly diverse menu for a country pub.
