Monterrico

Monterrico is the most popular beach in Guatemala and also the closest to Guatemala City and Antigua. The beaches are full of interesting but awkward steep angles due to the strength of the pounding surf.

Monterrico Travel Tips
Monterrico travel tips courtesy of GeckoGo
  • It's a really nice place to see the pacific and dark sand (volcanic sand). But don't plan to do some "beach holidays" there. It's hard to swin, the waves are very strong. Sometimes you can't go into the sea. (You may can see turtles in the night if you walk on the beach).  Léa G.
  • Beautiful black sand beaches, slow and laidback town, every thing comes to a stop at sunset, turtle hatching is amazing, don't miss the early morning tour around the mangrooves...and kick ass fish tacos!!  Aj
  • The black sand beach is amazing but has dangerous tides, don't go swimming, people have drowned. The food is cheap and accomodation likewise. Definitely worth a visit if you happen to be on the west coast of Guatemala!  Jean S.
