The Northwest Territories are a part of the northern region of Canada Although originally intended as all the Canadian territories to the west and north of Ontario, Northwest Territories was trimmed by establishments of Prairie provinces at first, and later with the separations of Yukon Territory in 1898 and of Nunavut Territory more recently.
