Pondicherry

Pondicherry is a union territory in Southern India. It consists of a number of so-called pockets in three different states:

All the territories of Pondicherry were under French occupation before they were peacefully handed over back to India.

• Pondicherry pocket -- a cluster of 11 enclaves in Tamil Nadu, containing the main town and capital of the territory
• Auroville -- a popular spiritual and religious site in Pondicherry state, very near to Chennai
• Karaikal pocket -- an enclave further south in Tamil Nadu
• Mahe(India) pocket -- two enclaves in Kerala
• Yanam pocket -- an enclave in Andhra Pradesh

Tamil is the official language. French and English is understood and spoken by the educated elite. good

The territory consists of enclaves isolated from one another, so "getting around" is somewhat indistinguishable from getting in and out of the place.

• Visit the Ashram! It is a fascinating and peaceful place. It's a bit scary, too, when you see so much devotion in a religion you might not share. A very interesting experience. Be cautious how people behave and try not to be the typical tourist. Remove your shoes when you see others do it. • Daniela H.
