Rethymno Prefecture

Rethymno PrefectureRethymno Prefecture

Rethymno is in the Greek island of Crete.

Crete is approximately 260 km long and 60 km wide.

Cities
  • Rethymno — this interesting town is mostly popular with families
  • Bali — not the Indonesian island, but a popular tourist village
  • Plakias — a stunning, long, gently shelving largely sandy beach
  • Margarites — a surprisingly beautiful and quiet town south of Rethymno off the old road to Heraklion, famous for its ceramic cottage industry. Look around the village before buying; some workshops are hidden gems, others are low-quality tourist traps.
Getting There
By plane

Chania airport is much smaller and far less busy than Heraklion airport. The distance from Heraklion to Rethymno is 80 km and from Chania to Rethymno 45 km Crete flight schedules.
